El Hueco (the hole) is Medellín's largest commercial district, covering roughly 28 blocks in the Guayaquil sector of La Candelaria, between Calle 44 and Calle 50 and between Carrera 51 and Carrera 57, near San Antonio metro. According to the Somos El Hueco merchants' association quoted by the regional press, the perimeter gathers about 1,200 formal merchants plus more than 3,000 street vendors, with a daily flow estimated at around 1.2 million people. It sells clothing, footwear, school supplies, toys, home goods, beauty items, appliances and jewellery; commerce on this site predates 1889, and the present cluster took shape in the 1990s.
A significant share of the shops and interconnected commercial centres supply small traders and resellers wholesale (al por mayor): the district's own virtual platform runs a dedicated wholesale window with a first-order minimum of six mixed units. For Chinese exporters of daily-use products, stationery, toys and beauty accessories, El Hueco is a high-velocity Colombian channel. Most shops are cash-only, Sundays are nearly closed, weekday mornings are best, and bargaining is expected; foreign accents usually trigger higher starting prices.
